2.Update: Und hier zum Selbermachen!

In just about a week I will be returning to Germany, leaving Montreal for an indefinite amount of time. (Well, actually I will be back for my defense some time in Fall, but only for a couple of days.) It’s been a very fun time in Montreal but after 3 1/2 years it’s also time for a change. Nevertheless, I will be missing this place. Especially right now in the summer, with all the festivals going on, Montreal is a really great place to be. We will see how Darmstadt compares…

On August 1st I will be starting as a PostDoc with Mira Mezini and her Software Technology Group. Like the Sable Research Group, these folks are working on program analysis of Java-like languages, but with a more dynamic and software-engineeringy twist to it. I think it is going to be great to get a new perspective on things.

Also, of course, being at Darmstadt for me means being much closer to home and my friends and family over there, which is always nice. What else is changing? Well, in terms of research not much. Laurie and I agreed that I should still further maintain Soot for a while, until somebody else at McGill is familiar enough with the framework to take over. I also plan to still make contributions to the AspectBench Compiler. The only other thing I might need to change is the header graphics on my webpage

The proof: it’s done! (Yes, the bandage around my wrist shows the effort – too much heavy –duty typing lately. But vacation is on the way.)

Update: If you thought the red tape was restricted to my wrist you were wrong. Just one hour after my submission I got notice that allegedly one of my forms was filled out incorrectly. *sigh*

So what’s next? First of all vacation in the Maritimes. I suppose that’s well deserved.

Besonders schoen auch, dass das BKA die Sperrlisten selber bestimmen kann, ausgerechnet unter Aufsicht des Bundesbeauftragten fuer den Datenschutz (welche Ironie!!!). Naja, ich gebe dem Gesetz ein halbes Jahr, dann werden die Gerichte es wohl wieder kippen – genauso wie jedes zweite der anderen Gesetze, die die grosse Koalition in den letzten Jahren fabriziert hat. Nur schade, dass dieser Ganze Muell soviel kostet und sowenig bringt. Da kann man nur hoffen dass in der neuen Regierung mal Leute sitzen die nicht nur an Ihr eigenes Profil denken sondern eigentlich regieren wollen.

But first it’s time for a change. Next week I’ll be in Algonquin Park for seven days without phone or internet connection.

Membership is really inexpensive: For 78 dollars you can use any bike during the entire season (up until November), for up to 30 minutes per ride. (After 30 minutes, additional fees apply.) I am curious how this works out. I think the idea is excellent but we will have to see how well it works in practice.
